National Defence Studies Institute Headquarters

National Defence Studies Institute (NDSI) was established by virtue of Royal Decree on the Organization and Function of Supreme Command Headquarters, Ministry of Defence, B.E. 2533 (1990), with August 29, 1990 being the date of establishment.

Philosophy “Education and cooperation on security coordination form an important foundation for the existence of State.”

Vision “All armed forces educational institutions must provide support to strengthen and secure the Royal Thai Armed Forces, with every entity having belief in the importance of joint operations in all dimensions, in a connected and integrated manner.”

NDSI is the highest armed forces educational administration organization, with primary roles in armed forces personnel development, education, research, and  cooperation on security coordination, especially education at the high-level of the armed forces, where education on strategy and national security has been provided to the public and private sectors for a long time.

Currently, as per the Royal Decree on the Organization of the Royal Thai Armed Forces B.E. 2552 (2009), NDSI is a subordinate unit of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, having a duty to offer recommendations on policy, plan, direct, coordinate, supervise, and implement education and provision of knowledge on national security, strategic research, military knowledge dissemination, military history, archaeology, and museum, operations of the National Memorial and Military Education Council of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, with the Commanding General of the National Defence Studies Institute being the responsible person.

     
NDSI’s subordinate units comprising :
     1. National Defence College. (NDC)
     2. Joint Staff College. (JSC)
     3. Institute of Security Psychology (ISP)
     4. Strategic Studies Center. (SSC)
     5. Armed Force Academics Preparatory School. (AFAPS)
     6. Military Technical Training School. (MTTS)

Besides, NDSI has a duty to serve the Military Education Council as the Secretariat of the Military Education Council, which has the Minister of Defence as the Chairman.

NDSI is committed to developing the Royal Thai Armed Forces’ education to bring about efficiency and result in a secure foundation of military education, while playing important roles in serving as the center of knowledge on national security and defence, where every sector can apply the knowledge for the country’s security, happiness and prosperity.

  National Defence College (NDC)

 National Defence College (NDC), having a duty to provide knowledge and research on national defence, with the Superintendent of the National Defence College being the responsible person. NDC first provided education in 1955 to both military and civilian officials, including state officials and employees of state organizations and state enterprises, both private and political sectors, when at that time, Field Marshal Por Pibulsonggram, the Prime Minster and Minister of Defence, was the first Superintendent of the National Defence College.

NDC offers three core courses as follows:
- National Defence Regular Course
- National Defence Regular Course for the Joint State - Private Sectors
- National Defence Regular Course for the Joint State - Private and Political Sectors
  Joint Staff College (JSC)

Joint Staff College (JSC), having a duty to provide knowledge on military strategy, joint/combined operations, and other knowledge which is useful to planning and directing operations in the maintenance of national security, with the Commandant of the Joint Staff College being the responsible person. JSC first provided education in 1956 to military, police and civilian officials, under the name of “Combined Staff School,” which was a subordinate unit of the Directorate of Joint Staff. In 1991, it was upgraded to “Joint Staff College,” being a subordinate unit of NDSI.

JSC’s core courses are as follows:
- Joint Staff Course
- Joint/Combined Operations Course
- Administrative Staff Course

  Institute of Security psychology (ISP)

Institute of Security Psychology (ISP), having a duty to provide knowledge on socio-psychology, political warfare, information operations; conduct research and develop doctrines socio-psychology, political warfare, and information operations, to serve national security, with the Director of the Institute of National Security Psychology being the responsible person.ISP first provided education in 1955 to military, police and civilian officials, including employees of state organizations and the private sector.     

ISP’s core courses are as follows:
- Staff Officer Psychological Operations Course
- Joint Information Operations Course
- Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters Executive Relations Development Course

  Strategic Studies Center (SSC)
Strategic Studies Center (SSC), having a duty to study, research and evaluate strategic environments that may have effects on national security as well as offering recommendations on security strategy to units of the armed forces and the government, with the Director of the Strategic Studies Center being the responsible person.
SSC offers a course for military, civilian officials and private sector, namely Strategist Course.  Besides, SSC organizes dialogue meetings on strategic issues for solutions to important problems of the country and serves as the secretariat to organize meetings of ASEAN Studies Center to study changes and problems occurring in ASEAN and neighboring countries, as well as recommending guidelines in handling changes and solving future problems.
  Armed Force Academics Preparatory School (AFAPS)

Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, having a duty to command and provide education and training to armed forces academies preparatory cadets on cognitive, affective, psychomotor domains on military and police subjects to equip them with basic qualifications and attitudes for self-development to progress in terms of knowledge, character, and qualifications of a unit leader, with the Superintendent of the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School being the responsible person.

Military Technical Training School, having a duty to provide technical education in various fields so as to provide graduates with knowledge and abilities to serve as technicians as required by the units of the Ministry of Defence, and produce technicians of various skills to accommodate economic expansion under the government’s policy, with the Commandant of the Military Technical Training School being the responsible person.
