Education is an integral part of life, from earliest childhood, well into adulthood. Education has no bounds. Methodologies are constantly changing and being improved upon. Education is crucial in all fields and careers. As for the military, which is the organization responsible for our country's security, it is necessary to study military strategy and current military technology. On August 29, 1990, a Royal decree was signed and issued, hence the foundation of the "National Defence Studies Institute" upon to Supreme Command Headquarters, Ministry of Defence.
The responsibility and duty of NDSI is proposing strategics, system of administration, supervision and plan in relation to its teaching programmes on the country's external and internal security needs, as well as in research on military strategics. National Defence, Combined Campaign, Joint Campaign, Directing in high-level, political warfare, psychology operations, and strategic research, Consideration Improvement including to offer the ideas about educational project, number and qualification of learner for the opened courses that are suitable for the situation. To plan the seminar in analyzation of military strategic research along with the concerned strategics, To plan, to direct, to corporate, to take care of, to progress the budget, to manage the budget and resourses in conform to get along with the operation of the NDSI. To plan and to corporate the education with civilian in order to support personnel of the army to be widen up the education for Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, Doctoral's Degree. Currently, NDSI is responsible for the administration of advanced military education programs and postgraduate courses in conjunction with public university. The total amount of 1,000 students goes through various courses of the institute each year. Another outstanding task of NDSI is to organize a degree presentation ceremony by His Majesty the King Of Thailand to graduates from 8 higher military academic institute annually.
There are altogether 6 subordinate units of NDSI, namely :
1. National Defence College. (NDC)
2. Joint Staff College. (JSC)
3. Applied Psychology Institute. (API)
4. Strategic Studies Center. (SSC)
5. Armed Force Academics Preparatory School. (AFAPS)

National Defence College (NDC)
The National Defence College or NDC is responsible for sharing information with regard to national security, to military and civil personel from both public and private sectors, in order to develop and understanding of national security concerns.
Joint Staff College (JSC)
To give operating teaching program on military strategic to high rank commanders, joint/combind operations, and obtain knowledge with the aim to sustain of planning and command national security program. Joint Staff College is supervised by the Commanding General.
Applied Psychology Institute (API)
To give planning, command, control, coordination and supervision on education of social Phychology, political warfare, Phycology operation, Public relations, military economy strategic, Science and Technology, energy, environment, for military, police, civil officials and personnel from public agencies and studying and researching on social phychology, political warfare, phychology operation, public relation, military Strategy economic and Science of technology, to doctrine development, political warfare operation with the aim to sustain national security, These missions are under the supervision at the API Director General.
The Strategic Studies Center
Strategic Studies Center is responsible for researches and assessment of all strategy related factors affecting national security. The center established a venue for training, conferences, seminars as well as arranging forum for discussion among academics from both Thailand and partner nation. Moreover, the center also collects research information from various academic sources.
Armed Force Academics Preparatory School (AFAPS)
AFAPS is primarily an academic institution responsible for educating pre-cadet, plus the basic military and police training. Pre-cadets are prepared and trained to excel in academic. – to become well-rounded gentleman and potential leaders with honor loyalty, integrity, and good physical condition.
Military technical training school
Military technical training school was established on the cooperation of Thai and Australian government under Southeast Asian Defence Joint Treaty Organization with 3 missions:
- To educate and equip pre-cadets with knowledge aqnd professional skills to be effective military and police officers.
- To find their improvement potertial and the character traits essential for becoming leaders of military units.
- To train the pre-cadets to live up to the school’s philosophy of unity, knowledge and integrity with honor system.
